The symposium draws its central ideas from the following Research Institute collections: the papers of David Tudor; the papers of the poet and writer Mary Caroline Richards, who taught at Black Mountain College with John Cage, Tudor, Merce Cunningham and Robert Rauschenberg; and the archives of Experiments in Art and Technology, an organization co-directed by Rauschenberg and the electrical engineer Billy Kluver. Please see the Collections Overview page for more information on these and other relevant collections.
In addition to two days of paper sessions, the symposium will present a "Panel of David Tudor's Friends and Collaborators," featuring Jean Rigg as moderator with Billy Kluver, Jackie Monnier, Gordon Mumma, Pauline Oliveros, and Christian Wolff as panelists. A series of events co-sponsored with California Institute of the Arts will include concerts on May 18 and 19 of music composed by Tudor or written for him, and a realization of Tudor's "electroacoustic environment," Rainforest IV, created by a collective of CalArts composers and performers under the direction of Mark Trayle, with guest participants Ralph Jones, Paul DeMarinis, Bill Viola, John Driscoll, John D.S. Adams, and Ron Kuivila. Piano repertoire on the two concerts will be selected from the GRI's David Tudor Papers and performed by Vicki Ray and David Rosenboom.
Presented by New Music Concerts in Toronto in April 23, 24, 1999 on a festival titled Music 4 Eye &Ear .
Rainforest IV will be realized by Composers Inside Electronics members John D.S. Adams, D'Arcy Philip Gray and Matt Rogalsky.

The concert was a wonderful success! The evening began @ 7:00 pm with a pre-concert talk with D'Arcy and John. The 20 odd people who attended were given details on the pieces to be performed with live excerpts. The questions were plentiful. There was an enthusiastic turn out for the 8:30pm concert. The music Gallery was transformed into a vibrant environment thanks to the help of playful visual collaborations by Tudor and New York artist Sophia Ogielska. These works are lively, colourful, almost cartoon-like graphic depictions of Tudor's scores.
